Aromatherapy

What is aromatherapy? It is the use of essential oils from a variety of plant materials used for healing. The oils are concentrated extracts containing their own mix of active ingredients. Aroma makes it seem as though the oils are just inhaled, but they are also applied to the skin during a massage.

For nearly 6000 years, essential oils have been used for many purposes. The Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Chinese, and Indians used them therapeutically as well as in cosmetics. They were also used for hygiene, spiritual and ritualistic reasons. As of World War I it was found that essential oils aided in the healing of burns and skin infections. By the 1950’s, massage therapists, beauticians, and many health care professionals began using aromatherapy.

In the 1980’s aromatherapy became very popular in the US. Many lotions, candles and other beauty products are sold as aromatherapy. However, many of these products contain synthetic fragrances and do not have the same properties as natural essential oils.
