However, good health is more than just about the physical. The body and mind are interconnected, that just as much attention needs to be given to your mind.

When was the last time you read a good book or even a magazine of substance? If you have taken more than a few seconds to answer, it’s been too long. When the catchphrase came out years ago, “Reading is fundamental.”, never were truer words spoken. Although it was targeted to children, it is also “fundamental” for an adult’s overall health as well.

Reading helps with several main functions for the brain. Reading improves memory and lengthens the attention span. It increases the capacity of your working memory by involving brain functions, including visual and auditory processes, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and more. It rewires the brain and creates new white matter. Reading also heightens brain connectivity in the temporal cortex.

Reading is a habit. If you haven’t read in a while, it may take a little effort to get back into the habit of reading, but the effort will be well worth it. People read for a variety of reasons which include pleasure, to learn something new, to expand horizons, to relax, and more.

Try to identify a reason for you to start reading. Ask friends and family if they can suggest a good book to start with. Once you find an author you like, read everything they have written. You may also want to learn more about something that you have recently seen in the news or on a documentary.

If reading a whole book seems daunting, find a magazine that is of interest to you, but that also has substantial articles. Once you get “in the habit” of reading, it will be much easier to expand to more topics. By the way, it doesn’t matter if you read fiction or nonfiction, just start reading!

Sound Meditation

This 2-hour interactive hands-on workshop includes both a meditative sound journey and hands-on time where you experience vibrational sound therapy. There is no experience necessary for this event, please dress comfortably.

What is a Sound Meditation?

A Sound Meditation is a meditative journey that involves various instruments, each varying in vibrations and frequencies. This particular workshop includes 8 quartz crystal singing bowls, 7 therapeutic brass singing bowls, two Koshi chimes, and a gong. These vibrations and frequencies induce an altered state of consciousness, also known as theta brain waves. The resonates that are produced affect the entirety of your body leading to a state of total relaxation.

In this state of relaxation, the mind and body are able to come back into alignment and wellness. The Sound Meditation benefits the participants for up to 72 hours and has the ability to increase your happiness, has the power to increase your mood and well-being, while reducing anxiety, and can increase the faith and the spiritual connection for participants.

The Sound Meditation lowers your heart rate, slows your breathing, allows muscles to release tension, and brings ‘stillness’ into the mind. A Sound Meditation helps to reduce stress, deepen the meditative state, and allow(s) for a sense of peace and well-being to come over you.

During the experience portion, you will gain a better understanding of how the bowls affect us (you) on a cellular level. This will be done by filling the bowls with water to see the vibrations, holding balloons near the bowls to feel the vibrations, and using your own body to sense the vibrations that are created by the bowls. We will also create and watch a slow-motion video of the bowls for everyone to take with them.

Special Guest Host

Practitioner Michael E. Murphy strives to connect people back with their innate vibrations, therefore connecting individuals back to their natural healing roots. This connection helps the client reconnect to their body which leads them to regain balance between Mind, Body, and Spirit (Energy). Michael is a certified Vibrational Sound Therapist through the Vibrational Sound Association, he also is a certified Reiki Master Teacher and has been practicing Reiki since 2013.

Information

This two hour Friday evening special workshop is $70, is nonrefundable and is limited to 8 participants. Feel free to attend once or several events! You may not have heard of Yomassage yet. In fact, Minden Barrile is one of the few practitioners trained in Massachusetts to offer this fabulous new wellness service.

Yomassage is not yoga and it’s not traditional massage. Yomassage is a luxurious and profoundly relaxing experience that combines mindfulness, supported positions, breath work and relaxation massage therapy in a semi-private group format. The “Yo” in Yo massage is based on the principles of yoga and the philosophy of looking within.

During the class, you will enter various comfortable positions, and Minden will go around to each person and do gentle to medium pressure massage to a body area. Since the class is a minimum of 90 minutes and limited to four participants, each person receives plenty of hands-on massage time.

Additionally, you will be guided on a meditative visualization, that changes monthly, throughout the duration of this class. This will positively be a mind, body, spirit experience! By the end of class, you will feel a very deep state of relaxation and inner peace.

Yomassage is beneficial for everyone and it can complement your existing massage wellness program. Yomassage combines multiple ancient wellness practices in a modern and unique way! No prior experience in yoga is necessary and is structured to include all skill levels. The only prerequisite is that you are able to get down to and up from the floor.

Yomassage can also be a bonding experience for couples, parents & teens and friends but it's also great for some 'me-time' as well.

Upon arriving at the session, you will be greeted by soothing music, mood lighting, and a comfortably warm room. Everything will be provided for you to enjoy and benefit from this experience. You need only to come wearing comfortable clothing (that stretches such as yoga or sweat pants) and a sleeveless, non-restrictive top.

Everyone deserves access to therapeutic touch. Yomassage offers this to clients fully clothed, in a safe environment, by a Master Therapist. Each session will end with a feeling of relaxation and having received a full body massage.

Schedule by visiting the Creative Wellness Event Page. Each Yomassage is $70 and has a 48 hour cancelation policy.

Detox Your Home

We are bombarded by toxins in every aspect of our lives. It is almost impossible to avoid all of them. However, there are simple and easy ways you can limit the exposure and make a healthier, cleaner home.

You can start by being more mindful about what you might be bringing in when you walk through your front door. Always remove your shoes when you enter, and if possible, remove your outer clothing. Shoes and clothes are great vehicles for all types of toxins. The very next thing you should do is wash your hands to get rid of bacteria, germs, and any other substances you may have touched throughout the day.

A hardy cleaning of the bathroom should be done at least once a week, if not more often. It’s important to remember to use the fan in the bathroom even if the noise is annoying. This will prevent moisture from condensing on cold surfaces and will lessen the chance of mold growth. Even though it might seem easier to use a spray or tablet to clean the toilet, use a brush to scrub the surfaces, especially under the rim. Putting vinegar in the toilet the night before will help to break down bacteria and fungus while you sleep and make cleaning easier in the morning.

Just like in the bathroom, running your fan in the oven hood in the kitchen is important. It helps to eliminate smoke, steam, and carbon monoxide caused by gas cooktops. Cooking on rear burners is best as that area tends to draft up into the fan more quickly. Don’t allow dirty dishes to pile up over days. It’s a great way to attract bugs. If you can’t wash them right away, at least give them a good rinse with really hot water. Make sure to wipe down all your surfaces with a disinfectant daily, and don’t forget the refrigerator handle.

Although not exactly “green”, paper towels are best to use when wiping down surfaces in any room. You can buy reusable paper towels made from bamboo, that are washable and inexpensive. Sponges have so many holes and crevices that are perfect breeding grounds for germs. If you are set on using a sponge, pop it into the microwave or dishwasher daily.

Think about covering your mattress and pillows to prevent dust mites from moving in. Sheets can make or break how comfortable your rest is. Did you know that bamboo sheets are the best? They are natural and sustainable as well as being hypoallergenic. Make sure they are 100% bamboo and not a cotton blend. Don’t forget to launder or dry clean your comforter and pillows once a month as well.

You should not use any type of air fresheners in any room, not even the ones that say they are all-natural. Air fresheners emit hormone-disrupting chemicals called phthalates. These chemicals have been linked to several medical conditions including obesity. A safer way to freshen your rooms is to use natural potpourris such as lemon peels and baking soda. There are plenty of choices that you can find online.

If you really want to be “greener”, decorate with a lot of plants. Houseplants can pull harmful toxins out of the air. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, there are plenty of easy to maintain plants you can get.

Every little change you make in your environment can help. Find more natural ways to clean and you might be surprised at how much better you feel over time.

Connect It All

When people normally think about good health - they think about diet, exercise, and the body. Good health isn’t just about the physical body, it also includes the mind. Our minds and our bodies are interconnected.

A healthy balance needs to be maintained between your mind, body, and soul. In other words, you need to nurture your whole self, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. When was the last time you did something that was just for you and didn’t feel guilty about taking the time to do it? There are many things that you can do to achieve overall wellness and begin to cultivate that mind, body, soul balance.

Continuing your education either formally or informally helps to open your mind to new beliefs and possibilities. Education shouldn’t stop when your formally schooling ends, it should be lifelong. Yoga is a great activity to do to build strength, flexibility, and coordination. Many people say it also helps them to center themselves and calm their mind. If you can’t find time to go to a studio, there are apps, online sites and plenty of DVDs at your local library so you can try it in the privacy of your home.

There have been a multitude of studies on meditation and overall health. It need not be a long-drawn-out process, but doing it for a few minutes every day can help to improve your mood, your memory, and might help you sleep better as well.

It is recommended that you get 15 minutes a day of moderate to fast-paced exercise. If that’s just not for you, try standing and moving more around the office during the day, and take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Don’t sell fresh air and the out of doors short to help you feel better. Many folks find they lack essential vitamin D that comes naturally from sunlight. Even if you don’t have a favorite outdoor activity, try having your lunch outside, or reading a book while resting on a bench.

Shopping at the local farmer’s market is a wonderful way to connect with your community and to get fresh seasonal veggies. Upping the amount of plant-based foods can ward off a plethora of chronic diseases.

Connect further with your community by volunteering. Your heart and soul will be nourished by helping others work toward a common goal. It’s a great experience for adults, but also make sure to get the kids involved at an early age as well.

Finally, get the “junk” out of your life. Switch to natural beauty and skincare products. Shop for green cleaners instead of using harsh chemicals. Let go of the little things in your life that bother you but are really of little importance.

Be grateful, please yourself before others, be kind to everyone (including yourself), and slow down and smell the roses.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System

Image by Raman Oza from Pixabay How healthy you are is directly related to your nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is your “fight or flight” side which helps us to protect ourselves when danger is sensed. The parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) allows us to function when we are not in danger, and dealing with everyday life.

When our PSNS is activated, our heart beat slows and breathing is calm. The body routes blood flow to our organs and away from skeletal muscles which are not needed when we are safe. This allows us to digest food, make hormones, repair muscles and build strength. This can only happen when we are in a state of relaxation. In essence - relaxation breeds recovery. We are healthier the more time that is spent in PSNS.

The SNS and PSNS are always operational. The one that is more active depends on how stressed or relaxed we are, but there needs to be a balance between the two systems for a healthy body and mind.

Unfortunately, in today’s society, we spend a lot of time in a heightened state both at home and at work. To make matters worse, our bodies cannot differentiate between real and imagined stress. The SNS is activated by chronic stress as well. Our bodies are not built to withstand this much stress and the negative impacts it breeds.

It is critical that we make the effort and take the time to try and restore a healthy balance between the two systems. An easy way to measure and track which system is activated is by your heart rate. Lowering your heart rate can be achieved by taking a few simple steps.

Throughout the day, make a conscious effort to slow your breathing. Daily breathing exercises will decrease your resting heart rate, improve your immune system and strengthen your lungs.

Nutrition is also a key component to restoring the balance. Try staying clear of or at least minimizing caffeine and sugar and up your daily intake of protein and minerals.

Many people also find meditation and yoga a way to lower stress and to learn to ignore triggers that set us off. Both can help with breathing and finding your center.

Finally - a regular massage is one of the more enjoyable ways to restore balance between the SNS and the PSNS. Massage helps to promote recovery, makes us stronger and calmer, and more able to help us fight infections.

Although the key to our survival is our SNS- too much time spent in this state can have detrimental and long-lasting effects on our bodies. The more time spent in PSNS, the healthier and stronger we will be.

CBD Oil

With all of the legislation surrounding Cannibus in the news lately, questions about Cannabidiol oil or CBD oil as a supplement are often raised. Many do not want these issues treated by prescribed medications that often have mind altering side effects and interfere with daily life.

Our bodies have a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system is involved with regulating sleep, appetite, pain, and the immune system. ECS produces endocannabinoids that bind with cannabinoid receptors in the body’s nervous system. Studies have shown that this has reduced inflammation and aided in relief of chronic pain.

CBD oil has also done very well in studies for depression and anxiety. According to the World Health Organization, depression is the single largest contributor to disability worldwide. Anxiety disorders are following closely coming in at number six. Common medications given for these issues bring a plethora of their own side effects.

There are legitimate places and times for pharmaceutical intervention. The common rule of thumb is to try the least invasive, or the least negative impacting intervention. It is also important to check with your primary care doctor when trying any new product. Just because something is over the counter and listed as a supplement, doesn’t mean it won’t interact with other medications you are taking. Having your doctor involved will allow him/her to follow your progress in regards to changes, both good and bad.

CBD oil is easy to use orally. It can be placed under your tongue or mixed with food or beverage. It’s a great way to give it a try to see if it is effective. This is absolutely true for CBD oil.

Stay tuned for more exciting studies involving CBD including help with acne, multiple sclerosis, cancer related symptoms, and heart health.

How Menthol Can Improve the Quality of Your Life

In the beginning of the 19th century, menthol arrived on the shores of America and almost instantly gained popularity. Yet, you still find yourself looking at the ceiling or tossing and turning well into the night.

The answer may be as simple as adding magnesium. Magnesium is a trace mineral that is naturally occurring in the human body and more than 300 critical enzymes found in the body rely on it. According to the National Institute of Health some of the jobs these enzymes play a role in include contracting your muscles, producing energy and protein, blood pressure, nerve function, glucose levels, and helping you to de-stress and sleep. Suffice to say, if you are not getting sufficient daily amounts of magnesium, it could be having an effect on your whole body.

Psychology Today has been quick to point out that magnesium is one of the 24 most important nutrients for your body, and a deficiency can impact the quality of your sleep. Lower levels of magnesium can lead to you feeling anxious and stressed out, and even depression, which contributes to trouble falling asleep.

There are several ways to add magnesium from improving your diet to taking supplements. The easiest and most convenient way is to use a topical oil or cream containing magnesium. Studies by the National Sleep Foundation showed that magnesium helps to support high quality sleep and is a much better alternative to taking sleeping pills.

Over time data has shown that anywhere from half to three-quarters of all adults are likely to be deficient in magnesium. Data also points to one conclusion: sleep is vital for your wellbeing! If everything you have tried up to this time has not improved the quality of your sleep, you may want to try adding magnesium cream to your nightly regimen. You may also want to ask your massage therapist about adding magnesium cream or oil to your massage.

Exfoliating Your Body for Softer Skin

Exfoliation describes any process meant to remove dead skin from the body. Whichever technique you choose, a regular routine will ensure your skin feeling and looking softer.

Start the process with a nice warm bath or shower. Warm water will help to open your pores to allow a deeper cleaning. Soak for a good 15 minutes and use a perfume-free soap. After soaking, you will be able to rub a lot of dead skin off with your hands, especially on your feet and toes.

Next, rub your skin with a textured sponge or rough feeling wash cloth. Whatever you use, it should not be too abrasive or cause any pain. For those tough areas on the backs of arms and legs, you may want to try a natural bristle brush.

Begin scrubbing your body from your feet moving upward. Starting at the bottom will help to encourage positive blood circulation. You will want to use small circular motions. Give extra attention to heels, knees and elbows as they tend to be the areas that are most dry.

Finish the exfoliation treatment by rinsing with hot water to rinse away the dead skin and to help relax you, follow up with a good moisturizer. You should see an immediate difference in the look and feel of your skin. It is recommended that you repeat this process 2-3 times per week to maintain the effects.

It’s All About The Color

Do you ever wonder why you are drawn to certain colors or why some colors bring out different emotions? There appears to be a strong correlation to the colors in nature. A saturated blue is often associated with a beautiful blue sky, a calm lake and tends to bring out a soothing effect. Green is a great color to use in the workplace on your desk. Green is restful for your eyes and produces the least amount of eyestrain. Many companies use a large amount of this color on their websites for this reason as well.

You may want to consider painting your office blue and green. Researchers at Creighton University found these colors helped the employees to feel more calm, centered, and positive towards their work. The blue lowered the heart rate, the green reduced anxiety and is also associated with money.

On the opposing side, if you want to be seen as aggressive, choose black. There was a study done with 52,000 National Hockey League games some years ago showing that when the teams wore their black jerseys, there were more incidents of aggression and penalties. Because of this study, the NHL made it mandatory that the home team wear only white jerseys. The same teams were assessed after the change and the data showed the teams had significantly less issues on the ice.

You also need to be mindful about the saturation and brightness of color and how people respond. Saturation is how pure the color is. Less saturated colors tend to have an underlying gray color. Brightness is how light a color is. Less saturated, but bright colors are relaxing. Highly saturated and less bright colors are more energizing to look at.

Since the biology connected with basic color vision is the same for all people with normal color vision, it’s fairly unlikely that we can attribute color preference to DNA or genetics. Many say it relates more to culture and some say life experiences which accounts for changes in preferences over the years. Whatever the reason, it may be worth a little research before you decide to change the main colors in your life.

source: Pinterest.com

Pregnancy Massage

What better time to pamper your loved one or yourself, than during pregnancy. A pre-natal massage can absolutely help with many of issues.

Many women also experience a heightened amount of stress for a variety of reasons, good and bad. Massage can help by increasing the secretion of dopamine and serotonin which eases depression and reduces anxiety. Massage also helps to soothe the nervous system making it easier to fall asleep.

Edema is a very common problem in pregnancy. This is where fluids build up and cause swelling of the ankles, feet, and lower legs. Massage increases the circulation of blood and lymph, helping to carry the excess fluids from the extremities which decreases swelling, making mom more comfortable and able to put her favorite shoes back on.

Here at Creative Wellness, we cater to the expectant mom. We have special equipment, including a table with a tummy cut-out and a bolster system. Our goal is to make the pregnant woman as comfortable as possible to maximize the effects of the massage. If “smells” aren’t an issue we also include aromatherapy with our four signature scents. Of course, you can also opt for scentless as well.

Our massage therapists are very experienced with pre and post-natal massage. In our society, we all tend to over-stimulate and cram as much as we can into a twenty-four hour period.

We start teaching our children at a young age to do as much as possible. The poor kids barely have any time just to play and use their imagination. We pressure them about school, sports, the arts, and family obligations. Is it any wonder most of us grow up to be over-achievers and do the same things to our children?

Many families have scaled back to one income so the other parent can run the kids from one activity to the other. When is it time to just stop and enjoy the fruits of our labor, our family, and friends?

It is so important to enjoy what is happening in the present. This means not thinking about the past or worrying about the future. Connect with the present and learn to enjoy your own company. Connect with the moment and just relax.

When was the last time you did something that you loved just for the sake of doing it with no other agenda? Do you remember when you did that “something” and time seemed to disappear along with all the other stressors of your life? You need to find that happy place more often.

Reconnect with your body by trying deep breathing techniques to help slow you down. Meditation may not be for everyone – but visualization can help relax you and allow you to become more emotionally balanced. Some say it’s also great for the immune system.

Doing “nothing” may be the best thing you can do for your overall health. It can also make you attractive as a friend, mate or employee. According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, allergic rhinitis has increased substantially over the past 15 years. It is estimated that now 15-16 percent of all adults have allergies.

This year will prove to be challenging due to the crazy weather we’ve had and continue to have, making it prime breeding grounds for pollen and mold. This could also trigger people that have never experienced seasonal allergies to suffer as well. There are steps that you can take to ease some of the effects and discomfort.

First, make sure it really is allergies and not a cold or other virus. If you have persistent symptoms for two weeks or more, but no fever or aches, it’s probably allergies. Over the counter meds can be quite effective, but take extra steps to reduce prolonged exposure to the irritants.

Allergy symptoms can take a toll on your over-all health and well-being, so take them seriously. Keeping yourself in the best possible condition can go a long way.

Spring cleaning isn’t just to make your home look better, it will actually reduce or eliminate allergens that have built up over the winter. Pay special attention to bathrooms and basements, or any place where there is moisture. Don’t forget your beloved pet. Over the winter they have spent more time in than out, and so the buildup of fur, saliva, and dander is greater. Make your vacuum your best friend, and don’t forget to get the upholstery and the pet’s bed as well.

If your allergens come from the outside, try to suppress the urge to open all your windows when the temperature starts to rise. Screens do not keep pollen out. Also – try bringing your exercise routine inside for the allergy season.

If you must go out during this time, remove your shoes and change your clothes as soon as you come back to your home. No need to carry the allergens throughout your home. A saline nasal rinse or using a neti pot will clear out anything that collected on your outing as well.

If you feel yourself getting run down from the stress and strain of allergies, find time to get some extra rest. Treat yourself to things that help you to relax and rejuvenate, like a massage. You are worth it!

Marathons or Running for Pleasure

As the running season begins and marathons abound, it’s time to start thinking about how to improve your performance and over-all wellness, especially if you’re no longer that younger twenty something anymore. A regular massage regimen may be just the right ingredient to add to your training.

The massage therapist applies moving pressure to muscles and other tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and fascia. This helps to soften fascia tissue and makes clenched muscles relax. This is key to runners who rely on limber joints and muscles for peak performance and to be pain-free.

There is also research that points to massaged limbs being less inflamed and 30% more production of a gene that helps muscles build mitochondria. This helps to turn a cell’s food into energy which helps to repair the muscles. This suggests that runners would then be able to tolerate harder and more training by speeding up recovery.

When you have muscle stiffness, it tends to throw a runner’s gait off, which can lead to a number of other problems. If your body is at its peak performance level, you would be able to detect other issues in their early stages as well.

Massage also helps to improve flexibility and reduces the risk of injury. Massage and running make the perfect pairing.

When you are running, your body does sustained, repetitive muscle contractions. The force generated is in direct correlation to the contractions. This is what allows you to run further and faster. The issue that arises is that this can cause circulation to compress tissues, tighten muscles, and reduce your joints range of motion.

It’s for those very reasons why massage should be a standard component of your training. Having a regular massage schedule is very helpful. The benefits are cumulative. Make sure to consult with your massage professional to construct a plan that works for your needs and your budget.

Massage therapy vs Chiropractic Care – do they work together?

Although they are two separate disciplines, both needing a lot of training, there are many similarities between chiropractic and massage, and they work really well when you use them in combination. Chiropractic is really helpful for dealing with functional issues like these, but if you’ve been experiencing the symptoms for a while, you can sometimes find that your body stubbornly resists the adjustments a chiropractor makes, which can result in frustration and even pain.

If you’re finding chiropractic hard going, you could benefit from massage to help relieve some of the tension and tightness your body is holding onto, allowing the chiropractor to do their work much more effectively.

If you’re experiencing problems with stiffness in your spine and there’s a build-up of tension in the muscles supporting and surrounding it, trying to adjust the spine without working on the muscle tightness can pull on the spinal joints. This can make them even stiffer and means that it’s quite likely your pain will return, even if the chiropractic relieves it initially.

More than one kind of stress relief

If you feel like you’re under physical and/or mental stress on a regular basis, massage can be really helpful to you. It’s great for maintenance, getting rid of a build-up of tension in your body before it causes any damage that needs help from another professional.

Physically, there are signs you can look out for that might mean you’re under spinal stress, and if you notice any of them you probably need to book in with the chiropractor too. Spinal stiffness will be painful, but can also lead to pain in your arm, tingling or numbness in your shoulders and even sciatica. If these symptoms are troubling you, see a chiropractor before they get any worse.

Chiropractic and massage therapy work really well together when you have soft tissue tightness and spinal dysfunction at the same time. They don’t just correct the functional problem that’s causing the pain or symptoms but also help to relax the muscles and soft tissues so that any work carried out by the chiropractor is more effective and the effects last for longer.

Massage and chiropractic for injuries Using the two together is really helpful after an accident or sporting injury, even the aches and pains that you might get from DIY or gardening. Injuries treated with massage and chiropractic can often heal faster because the two treatments help to stimulate blood flow, boosting your body’s natural energy to heal.

Chiropractic and massage therapy are also, importantly, natural, drug free, hands on therapies and they don’t have to be restricted just to after injury or when you’re in pain, it can be beneficial to have a session of chiropractic or a regular massage just to maintain your muscular and spinal health and stop problems from occurring in the first place.

Try Something Different This Year

Every year folks set out to make their New Year resolutions. Most do not follow through for very long because the resolutions are often unreasonable or unrealistic to attain. Once the ”tumble off the resolution wagon” has happened, it’s extremely difficult to get back on. It can also cause depression and feelings of failure as well. Why not try something different for this year?

One of the most popular resolutions is weight loss. The older we get, the harder it is to take off those unwanted pounds. Shift the focus from the weight to trying to live a healthier lifestyle. The trick is to make whatever your plan is fit into the way you live your life now. Major changes only work for the very few, for a very short time, and are hard to keep up with. Make better food choices a few times a week and try increasing the amount you move each day. You may be surprised at the results.

Get a buddy on board with the plan as well. You will need the support and the accountability. Find a physical activity that both you and your buddy can enjoy together. We all have good intentions of spending more time with the important people in our lives, yet when was the last time you spent one on one time with your buddy? Combining time spent with that person with a fun healthy activity will check two boxes at one time.

So, if your goal is to still take off that extra twenty pounds, set bench marks. Bench marks are smaller and more easily attained. Shoot for the first five pounds, and reward yourself for a job well done when you hit that mark. Instead of committing to a long term gym membership, find out what short term, fun classes, like Zumba or beginning yoga, may be offered in your community.

If you find it difficult to change your diet, try eliminating just one item that you eat on a regular basis, like ice cream, and replace it with something healthier and satisfying like frozen fruit.

Finally, one huge mistake that is made when trying to make lifestyle changes is rewarding the accomplishments with food. Find other options that will make you smile like a piece of jewelry or a relaxing massage. Remember that it’s not about immediate gratification, but about subtle changes that have long-term overall effects.

What Is Stress?

In our fast-paced world, the use of the term “stress” is used in a wide variety of situations. He defined it as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”. Through his experiments on animals, he demonstrated that “stress” caused very real negative effects on the animals, including diseases similar to those found in humans.

Selye’s found that most people viewed stress as an unpleasant threat. He then created a new term, stressor, to explain the difference between the stimulus and the response. Selye’s noted that stress could be good when it motivated people to accomplish more. There were also situations where people would come under a tremendous amount of stress such as when planning a wedding, starting a family, buying a home, and so on. He labeled this type as “eustress”. Many have disagreed with Selye’s and formulated other theories over the years.

There are very few situations where having a stress reaction is helpful. A calm, controlled and logical approach is usually the better option. Regardless of the stressors that present themselves, maintaining a more even course of action is the better way to go.

Finding the time to take care of “you” physically and emotionally is critical to being a happy and productive person at home, in a relationship, and in the workplace. Most people wear multiple hats and put their needs last, if ever, over those that they feel a responsibility to.

It doesn’t matter what definition or theory you agree with, finding ways to handle stress is important. Massage has been proven to help with both the emotional and physical responses. Setting aside time to have a massage makes you feel good, helps to center your thoughts, is relaxing, helps with many physical issues, and lets you engage the calming and regenerating part of your nervous system, even if just for an hour.

If you have been debating on whether to try massage – now is a great time to do so. Don’t think of it as a guilty pleasure, but as a way to really take care of yourself which will undoubtedly have an overflow positive effect on everyone around you.

Hot Stone Massage

Are you looking for a way to enhance your already fabulous massage experience? The therapist may use them in the palm of the hands to massage the body and may also place them on various parts of the body such as down the back along the spine.

Altering the temperature of the body by applying heat is a long- standing technique with many benefits. Heat promotes relaxation, relief of muscular tension and stress, as well as increased detoxification.

This type of therapy can be traced back to many ancient cultures, including Native Americans. It made a resurgence back in 1993. Mary Nelson-Hannigan formalized the technique and called it LaStone Therapy. The trend, and subtle variations, is now in wide-spread use. Therapists may all have different approaches to how they administer the session. Having an open conversation beforehand allows the therapist to customize the session to your particular needs or concerns.

Stones are generally heated to 120-130 degrees F. They may be placed on the table covered with a towel for you to lie on while others are placed on the top of the body allowing heat to penetrate for both top and bottom. The stones can be used on all parts of the body from the face to the toes. In addition to all the previously mentioned benefits, the heated stones and manipulations can increase joint flexibility, soften dry skin and increase circulation. The session often allows the client to center themselves and find peacefulness.

Many are surprised to find that they are able to achieve a deep meditative state or even fall asleep during the session. The combination of a calm, quiet, warm environment sets the stage for the body to go into a restorative mode.

Taking some quiet time at the end of the session, eating a healthy meal and drinking plenty of water will enhance the effects of the massage. These activities will also help with a smooth transition back to the rat-race we call everyday life.

As with any therapeutic intervention, you will want to make sure you have given complete and accurate information to your therapist. If you feel you have any type of high risk conditions, check with your primary care provider first.

Let The Music Play!

Music is powerful on many levels. Music has been used in almost all cultures and for as many years as its existence, to treat illnesses and restore harmony between the mind and body. Recently, there have been studies that attempted to measure the potential benefits of music.

Scientists have found that it is particularly helpful in reducing stress and bringing order and security to people, especially children. It also helps with communication, coordination, and improves overall quality of life. Music helps to minimize anxiety and the sensation of chronic pain. There aren’t any groups of people, from young to old that cannot benefit from the positive effects of music.

Music soothes the soul and so much more. Many practitioners of meditation find certain music extremely useful. It can help to slow the mind and help you get into a relaxed state. The music you choose to listen to is very individual to you. The style you pick usually should be gentle, have a familiar melody and should help you center yourself.

In several studies, researchers found that the heart rate of students of all ages synced up to the speed of music they were played -- regardless of the musical style and their interest, or not, in it. Lively music made their hearts speed up. Conversely, if the music slowed, it produced a calming, immune boosting effect by lowering cortisol levels and increasing hormones that improved the immune response and raised endorphin levels.

And what about the Mozart effect? It is said that listening to certain selections of Mozart’s music enhances learning by activating both the right and left sides of the brain. This enables the brain to process information more easily and improves recall of information when a particular tune is used during studying and then replayed.

Music is a universal language, there is something for everyone. You may want to start to incorporate more music into your life to help improve your general mood and well-being.

Your First Massage Therapy Session

There are many settings in which one can receive a massage, as well as many reasons for seeking out this type of service. In the days before your session, drink plenty of water and don’t eat right before your appointment.

Be prepared to give a fairly extensive health history. Some therapists have the questionnaire on line or will send it to you ahead of time. Some of the information that may be asked includes medical conditions, areas of concern, your current level of pain or discomfort, and more.

It’s important to be as honest as possible, as massage could affect multiple body systems such as cardiovascular and nervous systems. The therapist may also ask about prescriptions and over the counter drugs you may be taking. This is all vital information and helps the therapist determine the best course of action for you to meet your needs and goals.

You will be given privacy to disrobe and to lie on a table with a sheet to cover you. Make sure to let the therapist know if you are uncomfortable for any reason or if you prefer not to be touched in certain areas. A professional therapist will never touch or ask you to expose genitals or breasts.

The room should be a comfortable temperature for you and often there is quiet music playing. Relax your muscles and remember to breathe. Try to block out the stressors of your day and let your mind go.

Your therapist is a professional. It doesn’t matter if you forgot to shave your legs and things of that nature. A good therapist is sensitive to a client’s feeling self-conscious about their body and will make every attempt to make you feel safe and secure.

Open communication with your massage therapist is key to getting the most out of your sessions. Those of us that live in areas where we have cold temperatures for several months out of the year, feel it necessary to make the best out of the warmer temps by trying to do everything outdoors like running, exercising and socializing – even to the detriment of ourselves.

Your internal body temperature is around 98.6 °F (37 °C). The body does not like to stray too far in any direction for this set point. When your body becomes over-heated you may experience some tell-tale signs. Muscle cramps are one of the first signals that your body isn’t happy. When you sweat your body loses electrolytes which causes cramping.

If you are not use to the heat, your body can also retaliate by dilating blood vessels to try and radiate as much heat away from your system as possible. This causes the blood to pool in your ankles which causes heat edema.

One very common condition is heat rash. This occurs when the sweat pores become blocked and tiny red spots develop on your skin. Not only are they unsightly, but they have a prickly sensation as well.

Heat has an effect on you physically – but it affects your brain as well. Many find it hard to function on tasks in hot conditions. You may experience irritability, have a hard time concentrating, or even become dizzy and incoherent.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can literally be the portals to death’s door. If you experience any of the symptoms noted above or if you find yourself vomiting, having diarrhea, feeling tingling or numbness in your hands and feet, have a seizure or pass out – get medical attention immediately! Take steps to ensure that you are enjoying the summer in a healthy, responsible way.

Seniors and Massage

One of the fastest growing segments of the population is the 65 and over folks, also referred to as seniors. It’s important to start good foot care as early as possible to avoid problems in the future.

Feet can be plagued with a variety of common issues. Foot odor, cracked skin, fallen arches, corns, ingrown toenails, fungal infections and even damaged bones can cause discomfort and reduced mobility. While some of these problems are congenital, many can be easily dealt with or even avoided.

Unfortunately, many of the problems tend to worsen with age. Giving your feet a little daily TLC may save you pain and even visits to the doctor. Considering the role your feet play in your daily life, don’t they deserve a few minutes of care each day?

The first rule is to buy shoes that fit well. Too many times we sacrifice comfort for style. If you experience tightness, swelling, blisters and calluses, sore heels and excessive shoe wear, you are wearing the wrong shoes. You should always buy new shoes at the end of the day. Your feet are a bit larger by then.

Look for the right materials. Synthetics tend not to breathe well, trapping heat and moisture. Natural materials like leather and cotton will keep your feet cooler and release moisture; athletic shoes with special materials or mesh work even better. You can't really avoid foot sweat. You can try to alternate your shoes, so that the pair you wore yesterday has a chance to dry out completely before you wear them again.

The muscles in your feet are just like any other muscles -- they need exercise to stay strong, so try taking a leisurely stroll. You may need a good pair of arch supports.

It’s important to actually wash your feet in the shower and moisturize them after as well. Good socks made of natural fibers can help to keep feet dry and healthy. And finally – most people think there is nothing better than a foot massage!

Take Care of Yourself First!

Taking care of you first is a foreign concept to many that were taught from a young age that serving others should be the priority. What happens if you don’t refuel on a regular basis? When all the fuel is depleted, the machine ceases to run and is not good for any purpose. Refueling your body and mind is essential to good health.

There have been innumerable studies done on people in business, homemakers, and others, all showing that self-care is not only necessary for the individual, but for all the people they come in contact with. Studies have also shown that those that give only to others eventually are in need of help themselves, which then seems to defeat the purpose of giving.

Taking care of yourself is the least selfish thing you can do. It will make you feel more alive, vibrant, and ready to face challenges. Self-care can come in many forms from very small, such as five minutes of quiet meditation, to very grand like cruising the Mediterranean.

Finding time for you may seem difficult at first, but like any other habit, just keep doing it until it is second nature. Pick things that easily fit into your life, and please, don’t stress over those decisions. It won’t take long for you to see the benefits and to actually look forward to finding new ways to treat yourself.

The catch is to find things that make you happy. It may be that hour long bubble bath, a walk at the end of the day, yoga, playtime with your dog, making a healthy lunch daily, playing an instrument, and of course, booking a massage.

What is Reiki?

The term Reiki is actually a combination of Japanese and Chinese characters. “Rei” refers to spiritual or supernatural and “ki” refers to vital energy. One of the main points of those that practice reiki is that vital energy can actually be channeled to help the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It is also referred to as palm healing or hands on body healing.

In recent years the practice of reiki has been integrated into many health care settings. As the push to treat the whole person, and not just the ailment gains momentum, reiki practitioners find an ever growing client base.

No one really knows for sure how reiki works. What is known is that in many cases, reiki reduces anxiety and stress, puts clients at ease, and has been reported to ease pain.

During a reiki session, the practitioner places her hands over the client, usually starting at the head, and focusing on the seven energy centers or Chakras in the body. It is believed that the energy flows through the practitioner’s hands to the client in an attempt to balance the energy centers. If each chakra is balanced and unblocked, the energy can run through the body which allows all related organs to be healthy as well. Many report feeling an intense heat and energy during this process.

Some feel that reiki is related to electromagnetic-type energy that interacts with a person’s electromagnetic field. Another theory is that it promotes relaxation which in turn lowers a person’s stress and helps to promote healing.

All in all, reiki does not have deep rooted scientific proof one way or the other. Those that practice the art and those that feel they receive positive benefits from the reiki just know that it works for them.

At Creative Wellness, you can schedule a Reiki Session or our unique Reiki Infused Massage, which combines traditional massage with the healing powers of Reiki.

Mindfulness Meditation

What is mindfulness meditation? Mindfulness is the practice of intentionally focusing your attention on the present moment—and consciously practicing acceptance of what is present within the mind and body without judgment.

The practice of this type of meditation is being aware of physical and mental sensations like your heart beating, breath, and thoughts coming and going. This has been around for literally thousands of years, although until recently has not found its way into the mainstream as much as other types of meditation.

Mindfulness has its roots in Buddhism, but most religions include some type of prayer or meditation technique that helps shift your thoughts away from your usual preoccupations toward an appreciation of the moment and a larger perspective on life.

Mindfulness is now being examined scientifically and has been found to be a key element in happiness, pain management, and overall good health. It has been proven in studies to lower stress and to improve health in many areas from mental to physical conditions. Some experts believe that mindfulness works, in part, by helping people to accept their experiences—including painful emotions—rather than react to them with aversion and avoidance.

Mindfulness can be practiced in a variety of ways, but the goal of any mindfulness technique is to achieve a state of alert and focused relaxation by paying specific attention to thoughts and sensations without assigning cause or reason. This allows the mind to focus.

Basic mindfulness meditation will most often have you sitting quietly and focusing on your natural breathing or on a word or “mantra” that you repeat silently. You can practice by allowing thoughts to come and go without judgment and return to your focus on your breath or mantra. Notice and allow emotions to be present. Practice a steady and relaxed naming of emotions: “joy,” “anger,” “frustration.” Accept the presence of the emotions and let them go. Notice subtle body sensations such as an itch or tingling and let them pass as well.

Although you can learn to meditate on your own by following instructions in apps, books, on tape, or video, you may benefit from the support of an instructor or group to answer questions and help you stay motivated. Creative Wellness offers one-to-one meditation sessions and we can also refer you to local studios if you are interested in group classes.

The Healing Power of Touch

There are many surprising benefits of massage, not the least of which is the healing power of touch. Many admit that poor or insufficient sleep affected their daily activities on a regular basis.

Massage therapy can remedy this problem. Several studies conducted by the National Institute of Health found that massage improved sleep for infants, children, adults and the elderly. Massage has been shown to increase delta waves which are the brain waves connected to deep sleep. This may explain why clients find it easy to drift off to sleep while getting a massage.

Not only does massage help you to relax, but it also gives your immune system a much needed boost. During a 45 minute session, the number of white blood cells, lymphocytes that help to defend the body against disease, increase in number.

There are other physical changes that also occur in the body during a massage. Inflammation can be reduced due to the lowering levels of cytokine molecules, there is a decrease in the stress hormone cortisol, and a decrease of the hormone vasopression, connected to aggressive behavior. All very positive by-products for those with busy, hectic lives.

Massage is now a sought after treatment for anxiety and depression. This is a tough world we live in and massage is no longer just for the rich and famous. Studies have shown that people who received ten, 30 minute sessions over a five week period had less anxious behavior, reduced heart rates, and reduced cortisol levels.

The desire and need for touch does not vary by gender, age, or socioeconomic status. A massage is one of the most simple and effective ways to improve a variety of health concerns. With all of the mental and physical benefits, massage should be a part of your over-all wellness strategy.

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage has a different focus from what relaxation massage offers. Therapeutic massage is appropriate when there are specific areas that need to be addressed that could include pain reduction, release of tight muscles, increasing range of motion, improving flexibility and more.

An experienced therapist will use a variety of techniques that differ from a relaxation massage. Although spa therapists have the basic training needed for relaxation massage, they may not be the best choice for therapeutic massage. Advanced techniques such as myofascial release, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, scraping massage, and cupping – all focused on addressing short term or chronic ailments may be used and require a different skill set and expertise.

Usually a deeper pressure is used for therapeutic massage, focusing on the problem area. Your session may also include a component of relaxation massage as well.

The intake process for a therapeutic massage is in-depth. Both past and current health issues are discussed and a plan of action is established. Having regularly scheduled appointments until the ailment, or issue, is “under control” is suggested. This may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on the client and the area or areas being addressed.

Having an in-depth evaluation allows both the client and therapist to understand the baseline or beginning point. Periodic assessments and benchmarks allow the client and therapist to track the progress of the treatments and to make any necessary adjustments as time progresses. Your therapist may also make suggestions about what to do and not to do during the treatment period to enhance the benefits and to limit any further harm or injury.

Do not hesitate to speak to your doctor about the benefits of massage. Open communication between all your health care providers will ensure the best possible results. A good massage should leave you feeling relieved of stress and tension, and giving you a sense of calm and wellbeing.

Massage helps to improve circulation, ease tense muscles, move fluids through the lymphatic system, and encourages the body to remove toxins. With all that said – massage will help you sleep better which is key to maintaining a healthy mind and body.
